Beaufort West – Police watchdog Ipid is investigating the brutal murder of a teenager in the holding cells of the Beaufort West police station.

Spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said on Wednesday they would determine if hourly checks were done on the cell shared by Gerdo Karelse, 18, and Zuko Mqungquthu, 29, as required.

"According to the police's version, they just found Karelse dead," he said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate would also find out if Karelse screamed during his ordeal and whether anyone followed up on this.

Karelse was arrested on Sunday around 16:00 and charged with assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and malicious damage to property.

His body was found in his bloodied cell at 06:15 the next morning.

Police said Karelse sustained multiple facial wounds. They would not comment on reports that he was found naked behind the cell door with his lips missing and his teeth scattered around him.

Raburabu said Ipid was still awaiting an autopsy report.

Mqungquthu, who was arrested for domestic violence on Friday, was charged with his cellmate's murder.

He appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and would remain in custody until his bail application on July 5.
