Pretoria - The High Court in Pretoria on Friday confirmed Ithuba was the rightful holder of the national lottery licence, the operator said.

The former lottery operator, Gidani, lodged a review application in the high court arguing that Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies unlawfully awarded the contract to Ithuba.

"We are delighted with the outcome of the litigation and assure the South African public that we will continue to focus on invigorating the national lottery and delivering world class service," Ithuba chief executive Charmaine Mabuza said.

Ithuba was issued its licence in November 2014. In July last year, the High Court in Pretoria found Davies's decision to award it the licence was irrational and displayed “an excessive appetite for risk”.

The court gave Davies 31 days to rectify areas in the licence where Davies reportedly exceeded his powers.

In August last year, Davies reinstated Ithuba's licence.

The Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed Gidani's appeal application in March this year.
