Pietermaritzburg - In another twist of events, Msunduzi Ward 30 councillor Jaiheen Singh is set to contest the upcoming local government elections as an independent candidate.

The Witness has established that Singh, who confirmed last week that he had resigned from the DA, has registered as an independent candidate.

There had been uncertainty around Singh’s future, with rumours that he was set to join another party.

Despite being informed that The Witness has in its possession the Independent Electoral Commission’s candidate list, which he signed confirming that he would be standing as an independent candidate, Singh said he could not “confirm nor deny” that he would be standing as an independent.

“I am still weighing my options. I will soon make an announcement,” he said.

Earlier this month, a letter was sent from Singh’s offices, stating that his resignation, which he had announced to the media, would only come into effect on July 1.

In the letter, Singh said: “I am still here to serve the community until my resignation is carried through,” he said.

Mergan Chetty, the DA’s mayoral candidate for Msunduzi, had previously rubbished Singh’s claims, saying his position in the party had already been terminated.

Chetty said Singh was informed in March this year that he would not be returning as a candidate in the coming elections.

He questioned Singh’s intentions, saying it was unusual for a party member to give a month’s notice of resignation, when members were allowed to resign with immediate effect.

“Singh’s membership was terminated as of last Friday. He is in receipt of the letter of termination,” Chetty said.
