Durban – Following the fire at the iconic Jesus Dome, the Durban Christian Centre congregants have erected a new worship venue.

A giant white tent, that will seat 2 500 people was trucked from Gauteng on Sunday, church spokesperson Ron Steele said on Tuesday.

"On Monday, it was unloaded and the labour-intense task of unpacking and laying it out on the Durban Christian Centre car park began. By 10:00 this morning, with the help of many church volunteers, the tent was up."

Steele said the church still had to bring in and lay out 2 500 chairs, get the lighting rigged, and install sound and video screens.

Senior Pastor John Torrens, who has been at the site for the past two days, said he was thankful for the volunteers who came forward to help.

Two morning services would be held at 8:00 and 10:30 on Sundays to accommodate congregants and there would also be a 17:00 service, said Torrens.

The famous 5 000-seater Jesus Dome, the church’s home for the past 17 years, was destroyed by a fire last week. The cause of the blaze was still being investigated.
