Johannesburg – A Johannesburg metro police officer was in a serious condition after he was shot and wounded in the left arm by armed suspects at the Provincial road near Finetown, South of Johannesburg, on Saturday night, police said.

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said two officers had stopped a white van for ignoring a stop sign, when two armed men, who were on foot approached the officers and a shootout ensued.

“The other officer who was not injured returned fire causing the suspects to flee in different directions,” said Minnaar.

The officer was taken to Lenmed clinic in Lenasia.  No arrests have yet been made.
