Johannesburg – A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing and strangling his elderly father in South Hills, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

An electrical cord was used around his 73-year-old father’s neck on Monday night, said Captain Xoli Mbele.

The man, 33, was with his cousin at the time.

"The cousin locked himself in the bathroom and screamed for help. Swift response by the police led to the arrest of the suspect," said Mbele.

The motive for the murder was not yet known.

Mbele said the man’s son would soon appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
