Durban - A Johannesburg man is missing and presumed drowned after he and a friend got into trouble while swimming at Umdloti, north of Durban, on Sunday.

The other man was plucked from the water by lifeguards.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Candace Grobler said that emergency service personnel had rushed to the non-swimming beach after a distress call was made.

"Two people got into difficulty [while swimming] and one person has been rescued. He is in a stable condition receiving medical care," she said.

Grobler said that the other man had disappeared beneath the surf and was still missing.

"The other is still missing. Search and rescue efforts are in progress."

The police’s Search and Rescue Unit was currently co-ordinating the search for the man, which included rescue craft and police divers.
