Johannesburg - Gauteng paramedics dealt with an emergency of different kind on Wednesday, saving a family of ducklings crossing the N12 near Boksburg.

Emer-G-Med paramedic Kate La Valette told News24 that they saw the waddling flock while heading to another emergency.

“We had been going to call in Boksburg and we had heard from emergency groups that there was a family of ducks on the freeway. While heading there we saw a lady in silver car following them,” she said.

When they returned from their call-out, they turned back and found the ducklings and their frantic minders on the freeway.

“We helped stop all the cars and made it safe for them to cross the road. They were in the grassy patch in the middle of the freeway and they looked like they were going to run back into traffic. With the help of some bystanders we caught them before they ran into the road,” she said.

Two older ducks flew into an adjacent field while the medics managed to corral their ducklings.

“Eventually we caught five ducklings and released them near where the mom was. They went waddling happily towards the water. It was fantastic and I haven’t done one of those calls in forever,” La Valette said.
