Johannesburg - Water restrictions will stay at level 2 in Johannesburg, despite Rand Water cutting supply by 15%, a city official said on Monday.

Johannesburg had managed to reduce demand by 10%, mayoral committee member for environment and infrastructure services, councillor Anthony Still, said in a statement.

"Whilst this is an improvement, it is still difficult for Johannesburg Water to balance the system. We therefore appeal to residents to take the Level 2 restrictions seriously as we do not want to go to Level 3."

Level 2 restrictions mean people may not water or irrigate their gardens between 06:00 and 18:00, may not use municipal water to fill their pools, or hosepipes to wash cars or hose down paved areas.

He apologised for major outages in areas supplied by the Corriemore (Northcliff and surroundings) and Alexander Park (Kensington and surroundings) reservoirs.

"This is out of the 96 points of supply from Rand Water. As a City we wish to apologise to the affected residents."
