Johannesburg - Five motorists were charged with reckless and negligent driving, with one clocked at 154km/h in an 80km/h zone in Parkland, Johannesburg, Metro police said on Sunday.

"Metro police officers... monitored the Zuurfontein Road when they stopped a BMW sedan driven by a 34-year old male for clocking 154km/h," Lieutenant Kobeli Mokhesang said.

Mokhesang said the driver claimed he was rushing to hospital to see a friend.

He said the incident happened at 09:20 on Sunday.

"Other drivers were caught doing speeds of between 113km/h and 126km/h," he said.
The speedsters were taken to the Sebenza police station and will appear in the Edenvale Magistrate's Court soon.
