Johannesburg – The Hawks in Gauteng arrested a 67-year-old attorney in Parktown, during an entrapment operation, for bribing Hawks members with R50 000.

Godfrey Sipho Sibiya was arrested on the spot during the operation on Friday when he offered the money to the Hawks in order to stop investigations against his five clients, the Hawks said.

His clients, from the Department of Health, are accused of selling job posts within the department at a price of between R5 000 and R6 000 during the course of last year.

Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu of the Hawks said members of the public, who had interest in the jobs offered by the department, suspected foul play when people who got the jobs confided that they had paid a price.

"The department then asked us to help with the investigations when more people were saying you have to pay so much of money in order for you to get the job," said Mulamu.

The clients were charged with corruption.

Sibiya appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of corruption after remaining in custody over the weekend. He was released on R2 000 bail and his case was postponed to May 18 for further investigations.

Mulamu said part of what informed the Serious Corruption Investigation team’s operation is that they have been experiencing corruption of this nature in most provinces around the country.
