Cape Town - Bonginkosi Madikizela has been elected as the leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape on Saturday.

He has been acting in the position left vacant by Mayor Patricia de Lille De Lille since January.

Anton Bredell retained his position as the provincial chairperson, while Albert Fritz has been elected as deputy provincial leader.

Bredell was up against Anroux Marais, Western Cape MEC for sport and culture, and Fritz against Western Cape MPL Mazisole Mnqasela.

DA MP Andricus van der Westhuizen maintained his position as provincial chairperson of finance, beating Dion George and James Hamilton.

"Internal contestation in over," said Madikizela after the results were announced.

"We only have one goal in mind now and that goal is to unite the Democratic Alliance so that as from tomorrow (Sunday) we can go out there and work towards the 2019 project."
