Johannesburg - A man who allegedly tried to rob a school pupil with a toy gun was killed in a mob justice attack in Kagiso, on the West Rand, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old died in hospital in the early hours of the morning, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said in a statement.

He entered a school on Tuesday, where he allegedly held up a pupil at gunpoint on the playground and demanded his cellphone.

Other pupils screamed and called for help. Local residents gave chase. They caught and assaulted him before handing him over to police, who called an ambulance. He sustained injuries to his head and body.

Kagiso station commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, commended residents for catching him, but condemned the assault.

"Some of them will now be arrested and charged with murder. We continuously warn people not to take the law into their hands as that may turn out very ugly for them," he said.

A murder docket was opened. No arrests had yet been made.
