Cape Town - Members of the Milnerton Fire Department on Sunday shown that their expertise was not just limited to fighting blazes, when they rescued a family whose two jet skis had bceome trapped in a kelp forest in Melkbosstrand.

The team had been conducting a surf launch exercise when they responded to the call, the City of Cape Town said in a statement on Monday.

The mother and one of the children managed to escape the waves, but the father and their other son were knocked off their jet ski.

Both had been wearing life jackets and escaped unscathed.

Officers helped escort the two back to shore and also recovered the craft.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith warned those who ventured into the ocean to exercise extreme caution, whether they were swimming, surfing or boating.
