President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a special provincial official funeral for former Gauteng MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu, who died on Monday, aged 69.

The president expressed his condolences and those of government and the people of Gauteng to the family, friends, former colleagues and comrades of Mosunkutu, who was a member of the Gauteng legislature between 1999 and 2011.

Mosunkutu also served as a MEC for various portfolios including community safety, public transport, roads and works as well as agriculture, conservation and environment during his 11-year tenure at the legislature.

"We have lost a stalwart of our liberation and of democratic governance and development in the economic heart of our country. Mosunkutu's contribution across various portfolios speaks of his political leadership, technical capability and determination to better the lives of South Africans in diverse ways and contexts," said Ramaphosa.

The president's spokesperson Khusela Diko said that the "details of the special provincial official funeral will be announced in due course following consultation with Mosunkutu's family and his political organisation, the African National Congress".

Mourners are expected to remember Mosunkutu at a memorial service on Friday at the Zoe Bible Church in Pimville Soweto, while the provincial official funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 3.

It is believed that the former MEC died from complications following a stroke he suffered in July this year.
