Cape Town – Khaya Magaxa is the new leader of the opposition in the Western Cape provincial legislature, the African National Congress in the province said on Tuesday.

Magaxa would replace Marius Fransman until all internal party processes had been concluded, said acting provincial secretary Thandi Manikivana in a statement.

Magaxa was currently also acting chairperson of the ANC in the province, a position which Fransman held.

"Khaya Magaxa is a brilliant mind with an energetic style, [and] incisive wit with informed opinions," Manikivana said.

"He is stepping into this important position with the full confidence of the ANC and we are more than confident that he will hold the DA government accountable and will present the ANC as the only organisation capable of governing the Western Cape for all its residents."

A woman accused Fransman of sexual harassment while they travelled to the North West for the ANC birthday rally in Rustenburg last month.

He has denied the claims.

Fransman told News24 last month that he would not fight the ANC's decision that he step aside pending an investigation into the allegations, because it was in the best interests of the party.

He said he would be "taking leave" during this time.
