Cape Town – A search is underway for a man who disappeared in the surf while swimming at Monwabisi Beach in Cape Town on Thursday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

He had apparently been swimming with his friend, 30, when they got into difficulty, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

He disappeared under the water before his friend could save him. The 30-year-old was rescued and treated for exhaustion and mild, non-fatal drowning symptoms.

Lambinon said they searched along the sea and shore for the 45-year-old man, but presumed he had drowned.

The local police and police dive unit would continue the search operation. Police opened an investigation.

The city’s law enforcement inspector, Wayne Dyason, reminded bathers to only swim at beaches where lifeguards were on duty, and in demarcated swimming zones.
