Cape Town – A man from Klawer who is being charged with the murder of a fellow resident of the small West Coast town, appeared in a packed magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

Coenraad Basson, 57, was arrested in Saron at the weekend after handing himself over to the police, Netwerk24 reported.

Basson has been charged with the murder of Hartvicht Ockhuis, 38. The State contends that Basson intentionally shot Ockhuis and a friend in front of his house in Brewer Street on Saturday afternoon.

Ockhuis was fatally wounded and his friend was admitted to hospital.

According to a family friend, the shooting occurred after Ockhuis’ car broke down in front of Basson’s house.

Bail application

It is understood Ockhuis and his friend got out of the car to go and buy petrol. Basson then apparently emerged from his property and asked what they were doing in front of his house, and an argument ensued.

Basson allegedly went back inside his house, came out again with a firearm and shot at the men.

Klawer North residents, incensed by Ockhuis’ death, marched to Basson’s home and apparently set fire to five houses in the same street. Basson had already fled by then, according to the family friend.

According to Ockhuis’ brother Boeta, who was also present at the court proceedings, Basson had said he wanted to apply for bail.

The case was postponed for seven days for the bail application and further investigation, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said.

The matter is expected to resume on September 5 in the magistrate’s court.
