Cape Town - Scores of people are expected at the Klawer Magistrate's Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday, where a suspect who allegedly shot a man to death in front of his house, is set to appear.

The 57-year-old suspect fled on Saturday evening after his house was set alight by angry residents, Netwerk24 reported.

He was later found in Saron, where he handed himself over to the police, a source said.

This follows the death of Hartvicht "Mannetjie" Ockhuis, 38, who was shot dead on Saturday afternoon.

According to a family friend, Ockhuis' car broke down in Brewer Street, where the suspect lives. Ockhuis and a friend got out of the car to go and buy petrol.

"The man came out [of the house] and asked them what they were doing in front of his house. This resulted in an argument and the suspect went back into his house, fetched his gun and allegedly shot at Ockhuis and his friend.

"Ockhuis was hit in the chest and his friend in the leg," the family friend said.

In retaliation for Ockhuis' death, five houses were set alight – including that of the alleged shooter.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that police were investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

Ockhuis' family couldn't be reached for comment.
