Johannesburg - Conditions at the Kokstad maximum security prison are making it difficult for Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir to consult his lawyers, which may result in more court delays.

"He cannot prepare. We cannot consult, the consulting facilities in Kokstad are inadequate," his lawyer Nardus Grové told News24 on Friday.

"[You communicate] through a thick glass panel and all communication gets recorded. It's a prison that is designed for sentenced prisoners."

Grové said they filed a court application last week to have Krejcir brought back to Gauteng. They needed to prepare for three "huge" matters.

He said Krejcir was not allowed access to court papers at the prison, it was far to travel and he could only consult him for an hour through the glass panel. He had visited him twice so far.

Grové said he was concerned that if his client was not transferred back soon, they would not have had sufficient time to prepare ahead of their allocated court dates.

Security risk assessment

Earlier, Correctional Services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said Krejcir was moved to Kokstad because it was the only other high-security prison in the country. Zonderwater, where Krejcir was previously held, was still under construction.

"Like in many other cases before, our security risk assessment required that he be taken to Kokstad."

Krejcir was transferred to Kokstad just before Christmas. It is considered the country's most secure prison. He was the first prisoner to be sent there before being sentenced.

Kokstad prison houses criminals with a reputation for escaping from custody, including Ananias Mathe, who slipped out of Pretoria's C-Max by smearing himself with petroleum jelly.

Last year, prison officials foiled a plot by Krejcir to break out of Zonderwater prison.

On August 24, Krejcir was convicted of attempted murder, kidnapping, and dealing in drugs. The matter related to the kidnapping and torture of Bheki Lukhele, whose brother, Doctor, had allegedly disappeared with 25kg of Krejcir's tik.
