Johannesburg - Correctional Services official Solly Metlae and gangster Sandile Mdumbe, who are accused of trying to aid Radovan Krejcir escape from custody, are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The two have been charged with corruption, conspiracy to commit an offence and defeating the ends of justice.

Metlae was guarding Krejcir when he tried to aid his escape.

Several of Krejcir's plots and plans to escape from prison have been thwarted by the Department of Correctional Services.

In September last year, departmental spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said they had averted apparent escape plans by inmates, which included Krejcir, at Zonderwater Correctional Centre, after it raided a number of cells.

The Sunday Independent reported that among the items found in Krejcir's cell were a pistol, ammunition, a knife, an item that looked like a taser, a pepper spray gun, screwdriver steel blades, 10 cellphones, a memory stick and a diary which contained the names of witnesses and investigators in his cases.

In November, Krejcir's mother allegedly deposited R600 000 into the account of a woman to help fund his bid to escape from prison, News24 reported.

Various reports indicated the 37-year-old woman, whose account it was, had been arrested after she allegedly made several cash withdrawals from different bank branches.

In October, a 45-year-old woman was granted R3 000 bail after appearing in the Cullinan Magistrate's Court, after she was accused of trying to smuggle a cellphone to Krejcir at the Zonderwater Prison, News24 reported.

Krejcir was then moved to the C-Max in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.
