KwaZulu-Natal police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a man was found in the Umgeni River on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police divers from the Durban Search and Rescue unit concluded the search at around 13:15, after the body was seen floating in the river on Saturday.

"A body of an unknown man was found in an advanced state of decomposition below the M21 bridge in the Newlands area," Gwala said.

The matter is under investigation, Gwala added.
