Mbombela - The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal has been ordered to make a public apology to the National Executive Committee or face disciplinary action, provincial deputy chairperson Willies Mchunu said on Saturday while attending the Mpumalanga Provincial General Council.

"When we addressed the national officials of the ANC, we indicated our dismay at some of the utterances that are coming from our province. Comrades of the youth league's utterances is one of them that we were not very happy with and we explained to the officials," he said.

Mchunu said the provincial leadership called the youth league to order in a closed meeting and its leadership apologised.

"That for us is very important because we did say if they don’t do so, they are going to face the disciplinary action. We indicated that it is our firm belief that they should not apologies in a closed meeting. They should do so publicly. If they don’t do so publicly, we will be the first ones to issue [that] they should face discipline."

The ANCYL, together with the provincial Women's League and MKMVA hosted a joint press briefing shortly after the Pietermaritzburg High Court ruled that the 2015 provincial elective conference was illegitimate.  The province had indicated that it intended to appeal the ruling. The leagues reacted to the national office's statement that only the mother body could decide on an appeal.

The ANCYL said in the press briefing that lasted for hours that the NEC should rather leave the province to make its own decisions on the appeal.

Mchunu called actions by the ANCYL divisive.

"It cannot be in the conscious of the ANC for us to go to public platforms and castigate our ANC leaders. It's not our conscience, it's not our tradition and in fact it is against the constitution of the ANC. At worst it is the most divisive thing in the ANC," he said.

The deployed members of the  National Executive Committee met with provincial leaders this week to discuss a way forward. The ANC is most likely to disband the provincial leadership and appoint a provincial task team.
