Durban – A 29 year-old bus driver was shot and killed in Effingham while he was on his way to pick up passengers, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

News24 understands that the shooting was related to taxi violence in the area, where taxi drivers and bus drivers are feuding over a certain route, however, the police could not confirm this.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police were called to a shooting incident in Greenwood Park on Monday around 05:45.

Gwala said when the police arrived they found a Mercedes-Benz bus with no occupants.

"The bus had bullet holes on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The police established that two victims had been shot and had been transported to hospital for medical treatment."

Gwala said the driver succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

"The motive and suspects are unknown and investigations are continuing," said Gwala.
