Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal businessman appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with embezzling R7.5m that was ring-fenced for the Ingwe Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs confirmed in a statement that MEX Dhladla, the owner of a popular restaurant, was released on R50 000 bail.

Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the businessman, is among other suspects, linked to the theft of the funds.

"Another official is alleged to have defrauded the department by forwarding a payment of R7.5m intended for a municipality into a private account.

"The employee has since vanished and law enforcement agencies are actively searching for the employee."

Dube-Ncube said a manhunt was on for all suspects who may have been involved.

"It will go on until every one of them is apprehended. We have a policy of zero tolerance for fraud and the public can now see it at work," said Dube-Ncube.

Dhladla is expected back in court on February 1 2016.
