Durban – A police officer was shot and killed while responding to a robbery in the Bluff, south of Durban, on Tuesday night, KwaZulu-Natal police said.Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said Brighton Beach police officers were patrolling in the Bluff area around 21:00 when they were alerted to a robbery in progress at a nearby garage.As the police approached the garage, the suspects ran out and the officers gave chase.During the chase, a police officer, Constable Thomas Kwela, 37, was shot and killed.One suspect was arrested and was expected to be charged with robbery and murder.The police are still looking for the other suspects who fled the scene with stolen cigarettes and cash.KwaZulu-Natal acting commissioner Major General Bheki Langa conveyed his condolences to Kwela's family, friends and colleagues."We condemn this brutal killing of a young police officer who died while protecting the lives of our citizens. Those who kill our police officers are the worst of the worst."They made the biggest mistake of their lives by attacking members of the law enforcement fraternity. We will spare no resource to ensure that the outstanding suspects are traced and brought to book. It will be in their best interests to hand themselves over before our police officers pounce on them," said Langa.
