Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal cop was speared to death while rushing to the aid of a woman who was stabbed, police said on Friday.

Newcastle K9 Unit Warrant Officer Sascha Naidoo was responding to the incident along with other officers at Section 7P in Madadeni on Tuesday when he was fatally attacked, police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

She added that the woman had reportedly been stabbed by the suspect. It was not immediately clear if she was also attacked with a spear.

"While approaching the suspect, it is alleged that the suspect stabbed Naidoo with a spear and [the officer] sustained serious injuries."

Gwala said the 45-year-old officer was rushed to a local hospital for treatment where he later died.

"The [59-year-old assailant] was overpowered... and immediately placed under arrest."

KwaZulu-Natal acting police commissioner, Major-General Bheki Langa said he was shocked at the incident, but commended Naidoo for his bravery.

"The member died in the line of duty when he was needed the most. He was performing his duty to protect and serve the community of Madadeni when he was attacked."

Langa condemned the killing saying the local community must "stand up and get involved in stopping this kind of attack.

"I sincerely send my condolences to the family, friends and his colleagues for the pain they suffered when the news of his death broke out. I want to assure the community that we will thoroughly investigate this case and make sure that the suspect is prosecuted and get harsh sentence should he found guilty by the court," he said.
