Durban – Two police officers are among a total of five people arrested by the Hawks for being in possession of large amounts of heroin near Tongaat, north of Durban.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo on Wednesday said that officers from the Hawks Organised Crime Unit nabbed the men - aged between 23 and 41 - on the N2 near the Tongaat tollgate on Sunday.

He said that two of the policemen arrested hailed from the KwaDukuza police station.

Mhlongo said the Hawks had received information about the two policemen transporting drugs from Chatsworth to KwaDukuza.

"A joint operation was swiftly conducted and the vehicle was intercepted along N2. A search was conducted and 498 heroin capsules were found in the vehicle. They were subsequently arrested and charged for possession of drugs."

Mhlongo said the policemen were granted bail of R10 000 each at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, while their accomplices were granted bail of R2 000 each.

The case was postponed to March 24.
