A VW Polo taken from the garage of a 94-year-old man who was found dead in his home in Pietermaritzburg has been recovered, police said on Thursday.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane told News24 that the man was killed in his home in Hayfields on Wednesday morning.

Vehicle recovered

"The vehicle that was taken from the house was later recovered at Mount Ayliff," he said.

Zwane said a case of house robbery and murder was opened at the Alexandra Road police station.

"Investigations continue," he said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics who assessed the man found that he had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life.

"Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead," he said.

Other cases

In July, three elderly people were also killed in Pietermaritzburg.

Their killer Kershwin Goldstone, 22, was sentenced to three life sentences in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on August 15.

Goldstone confessed to killing Patricia O'Connor, 92, Roland Heathcote and Patricia Tugwell, both 89, at the Kenwyn Retirement Home and Jacaranda Lodge retirement complex.

He was also sentenced to a further 55 years for three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one of housebreaking with intent to steal, and theft, as well as another of housebreaking with intent to rob.
