Durban - Two gunmen were shot and wounded after a high-speed chase and gun battle with police in Pinetown on Monday.

Sources with knowledge of the incident, who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity, said that the vehicle had been under surveillance.

It is understood that four armed men had been travelling in the car when they were confronted by police officers.

A chase ensued, with the car weaving between traffic, and moving from Stapleton Road onto Bradford Road, where the driver lost control and crashed into a garden.

The men then allegedly took off on foot, with officers in pursuit.

In the fray, two of the alleged gunmen were shot and wounded, while two others fled.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that paramedics had rushed to the scene after receiving word that two men had been shot.

He said both were found under police guard in a serious condition.

"Paramedics arrived and initiated care before the two were transported to the R K Khan Hospital for further treatment and care," he said.
