Durban - A councillor from the uPhongolo Local Municipality was shot and killed outside his home in northern KZN on Saturday night.

Mbhekiseni “Pat” Khumalo was shot dead at his house by assassins pretending they were residents needing assistance, the KZN Department of Community Safety said on Sunday.

The murder comes just weeks following that of councillor Ace Houston in Harding and the brutal murder of Inkosi Mathonsi of Mandeni.

Community Safety MEC Mxolisi Kaunda described the slaying as abhorrent.

"We find this apparent targeting of public representatives totally abhorrent as it sends a wrong message to those committed to serving in public offices in the province.

“It also undermines the right of people to democratically elect their public representatives. I have directed the police to do everything within their powers to bring to justice those responsible for this callous deed.

“What is most shocking and disturbing is that these killings appear to be systematic and well-orchestrated. We urge members of the community to work with the police to ensure that the assassins are brought to book soonest,” urged Kaunda.
