Durban – Nine more people, including three children, died in another fatal KwaZulu-Natal crash on Monday, paramedics said on Tuesday.

The incident, involving three minibuses, happened on the N2 in Umzumbe, near Port Shepstone, at about 18:20.

Emergency personnel declared a number of victims dead on the scene, and extricated and stabilised those who were injured, said Belinda Catchpole, the spokesperson for KwaZulu Private Ambulance.

Catchpole told News24 that two minibuses, travelling south, had collided with another minibus which was travelling in the opposite direction.

"The deceased are from two of the taxis. The driver of one of the taxis also passed away during the crash," she said.

Nine people who were injured in the crash were transported to various hospitals.

Police confirmed that one of the drivers was among the deceased.

Another taxi driver was injured, while the third driver escaped unharmed.

A culpable homicide docket was being investigated by Port Shepstone police, said Captain Nqobile Gwala.

The crash took place just a few hours after KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda had met the families of 15 victims who had died in a gruesome bus crash on Saturday in Ntunjambili, KwaSambana.

Weekend reports indicated that the driver of the bus lost control of it and it rolled several times.

Twelve people were declared dead at the scene, while three others died later.
