Durban – At least two people been killed, 400 displaced and more than 150 homes damaged in flooding in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said on Monday.

"Mop-up operations" had commenced following torrential rains. Four people had been reported missing.

Police were searching for people in Chatsworth, Durban who were believed to have been swept away while trying to cross a river, the department said.

Disaster management staff have been sent to provide help in all the affected areas. Displaced families were being accommodated in community halls and other facilities.

Cogta MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube urged communities to co-operate with disaster management personnel.

"We are in full control of the situation and so far we are swiftly and successfully responding to all the reported incidents," she said.

Drought still a reality

It was still too early to tell how the recent rainfall would affect the dam levels and whether it would contribute to breaking the drought in the province.

"As far as we are concerned, KZN is still facing severe drought and all water restriction measures imposed by municipalities still stand. The recent rainfall should not remove the sense of urgency we have worked so hard to instil," said Dube-Ncube.

Earlier, Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder told News24 that the rains had had a minimal effect on dam levels and that water restrictions were still in place.
