Police are investigating a murder after the body of a KwaZulu-Natal man was found with a single gunshot wound to his head on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the 22-year-old man was found inside a vehicle in Coniston, Verulam.

No one has been arrested and the motive for the killing is still unknown.

"His cellphone and wallet were missing. We are appealing to anyone who might have information about the suspects to contact the local police or our Crime Stop on 08600 10111," Gwala said.

Head of private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Prem Balram said his officers also attended the scene.

"Reaction officers interviewed several truckers who operate at a mining site on the same road and they had informed [them] that they had seen the bakkie parked on the roadside at approximately 13:15. They noticed the deceased slumped in the driver's seat and they assumed that he was asleep."
