Durban – A man has received a 22-year jail sentence in the Empangeni Regional Court for sexual assault, attempted rape and armed robbery, local police have said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane on Tuesday said Lihle Khoza, 32, was convicted and sentenced on Monday.

Zwane said on May 9, 2013, two girls, aged 14 and 16, were on their way to their homestead in Mkhoma reserve when they were accosted by an unknown male who forced them into the bushes at gunpoint.

“He sexually violated them, tried to rape them and robbed one victim of her cellphone and then fled."

Zwane said the victims reported the matter to the Empangeni police.

"More than a year later, one of the victims spotted the accused in the Richards Bay CBD and immediately informed the investigating officer, who swiftly followed the accused and apprehended him."

Khoza was convicted and sentenced to 12 years for sexual assault and 10 years for robbery, said Zwane.
