Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal man has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for raping his 6-year-old granddaughter, local police said on Thursday.

Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said the man, aged 51, was accused of raping the victim at her home on December 23, 2015.

He was sentenced in the Esikhaleni Regional Court on Wednesday.

Magudulela said the victim's grandmother was at home when she was alerted by her brother that her granddaughter was being raped.

The man was apprehended on the same day and made several court appearances until he was sentenced.

"We [police] warn the community to avoid leaving their children without proper supervision. Rather leave your child at an aftercare facility or at the pre-school to avoid making her/him another victim of these thugs.

"The parents should know where the children are playing and with whom... as kids easily accept wrong things as toys and are easily used."

Magudulela encouraged children to tell someone if anything suspicious happened to them.
