Durban – A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 48 years in jail for raping three of his nieces, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

The man, from Manyameni in Mthunzini, began raping the three girls in 2009, when they were aged between 8 and 12, Major Thulani Zwane said.

He lived in the same homestead as the girls and threatened to kill them if they reported him.

The Esikhawini Regional Court sentenced him to 48 years for four counts of rape.

The girls eventually reported him to police in February 2012. The Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation.

He was found in the Thongathi area, where he had been hiding after he learned that police were searching for him.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentence would serve as a warning to those who intended to rape children.
