Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal man has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment for raping his two grandchildren and another girl, local police said on Wednesday.

The KwaDukuza Regional Court sentenced the 69-year-old Glendale grandfather last week, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

In 2014, he was left to look after his two grandchildren, aged nine and 11, while their mother went to work.

He began raping them and continued to do so until a neighbour caught him and told the children’s mother.

Subsequently, another 13-year-old victim came forward and told her teacher that the man had repeatedly raped her. She was his neighbour.

KwaZulu-Natal acting police commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, said it was sad that people supposed to protect children were abusing them.
