Durban – A Richards Bay man has been jailed for 12 years for sexually assaulting two of his girlfriends' daughters, aged 10 and 11, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

The 34-year-old dated the mother of the 10-year-old between October 2014 and August 2015 and the 11-year-old's mother in January 2015, police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said.

When the younger girl reported the assault to her mother, she did not believe her. Only after she told her school teacher was a case opened.

He violated the elder girl after he had a fight with her mother.

He was sentenced by an Empangeni Regional Court magistrate to five years for sexually assaulting the 11-year-old and to seven years for violating the other girl.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni appealed to parents not to ignore their children when they report abuse.
