Pietermaritzburg - A KwaZulu-Natal man will spend many, many years in prison after he was convicted on a long list of charges at the Ramsgate high court on Tuesday.

The court convicted and sentenced Sandile Lellewyn Dlamini (34) to life imprisonment for murder, life for rape, 30 years for two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, 10 years for arson, 10 years for attempted murder and five years for kidnapping.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, on May 20 last year, Dlamini was having drinks with his friend, 30-year-old Mbongeni Ntobela, and a 40-year-old woman in the Ezinqoleni area near Port Shepstone.

After drinks, Ntobela and the woman went to bed, but later when she awoke, she found Ntobela in a pool of blood on the floor, with Dlamini standing over him with a knife.

Zwane said the woman asked Dlamini what had happened, but he stabbed her twice and forced her to help him put Ntobela’s body on the bed.

Dlamini then took out a match and instructed the woman to set the bed alight, which she did out of fear.

As the room started to burn, Dlamini hauled the woman from the house where he stabbed her several times, raping her in the process.

He then left her in a stream and she pretended to be dead.

When she thought it was safe, she crawled to a nearby house for help.

After a year he spent hiding in Verulam, police tracked Dlamini down after he committed a house robbery in that area. — Witness Reporter.
