Durban – Police arrested a 39-year-old man who accidentally shot himself during a shoot-out in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, local police said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said that at about 15:00 on Wednesday, taxi owners allegedly chased a man who was picking up hitchhikers along the N2 freeway, from Mtubatuba to Durban.

Gwala said the man stopped near the Msunduzi River, where a confrontation ensued.

"One of the taxi owners was fatally shot and others were shot and injured. The alleged shooter also mistakenly shot himself on the thigh," he said.

Gwala said the man was arrested by Kwambonambi police and taken to the hospital, where he remained under police guard.

"He will be charged for murder and attempted murder. He will appear in court soon," said Gwala.
