Durban – KwaZulu-Natal’s Tourism MEC and ANC provincial chairperson, Sihle Zikalala, buried one of his drivers and bodyguard on Saturday, his office said.

Bongani Maduna died last week when the car he and a colleague were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Richards Bay.

Zikalala described Maduna as a colleague, comrade and a friend.

"To me Maduna was not just a comrade and a loyal employee. He was also a brother and a confidante...He was an open and transparent person," said Zikalala.

Maduna worked for Zikalala for six years.

He previously worked for the late mayor of King Cetshwayo District, Thulani Mashaba, who was also killed in an accident in 2015.

"He was a martial arts expert and founded a karate team in Chesterville, where he once lived, with the aim of inculcating a culture of discipline among the township youth.

"He was evidently a man of many talents, because besides working as a protector, Maduna was also an avid photographer, hence we, in our team, had our own professional camera and video person," Zikalala added.

He is survived by his wife, Bawezile and his two daughters, Ziyanda and Balungile.
