A KwaZulu-Natal mother accused of murdering her 7-year-old son appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Megan Prins, 34, made a brief appearance before Magistrate Mohamed Motala.

State prosecutor Vaneshree Moodley told Motala that she had secured a bed for Prins at the Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where she would undergo a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.

On July 13, the court had said she would have to wait until a bed was available at the public mental facility.

Prins' mental state would be observed and assessed by medical professionals once she is at the facility. The matter was postponed to August 22.

Prins was arrested after allegedly admitting that she had killed her son, Sloan, after booking into an Umhlanga guest house in June.

'I am so alone'

She reportedly checked into the guest house and asked for a late checkout the following morning.

A few hours later, she called the owner, crying, and told him what had happened. He called the police and the paramedics.

Prins allegedly gave her son medication meant for adults before smothering him to death. She then allegedly attempted to commit suicide by slitting her wrists and throat.

At her first court appearance, the Morningside mother indicated through her lawyer that she intended to plead guilty.

Previously, she left the dock sobbing and, as she went down the steps to the cells below, was heard wailing: "I am so alone... I am so alone in prison."

She has been asked to refrain from communicating with her former husband. He is expected to testify against her.
