Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal health department is to assist law enforcement authorities with further investigations after the arrest of a nurse at the Phoenix Community Health Centre.

The accused, Msizi Ngcobo, made a brief appearance in the Phoenix Magistrate's Court on Monday after he was arrested at the clinic on Friday for allegedly stealing medical supplies, including syringes and needles.

His case was postponed to April 17 for further investigation.

Ngcobo has since resigned.

"Even if he has resigned, which ceases our internal processes of discipline, we will get whatever information and forward to the SA Nursing Council to investigate if there is any unprofessional conduct, or if the nursing council has been brought into disrepute because of his behaviour," KZN MEC for Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo said.

"We want to take this process forward and for now, accept the recommendation of the magistrate that further investigations take place."

Dhlomo commended the work of the security company based at the clinic.

"They did good surveillance and brought police on board to arrest [the] person suspected."
