Durban - A man suspected of being KwaZulu-Natal’s most wanted serial rapist has been arrested, provincial police said on Friday.

The 34-year-old man appeared in the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Friday and his case was postponed to October 25, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

He was arrested on Thursday. With the help of DNA evidence, he was allegedly linked to 13 criminal cases committed in Umkhanyakude, uThungulu and Zululand between 2012 and 2016.

In a separate incident, an alleged rapist was arrested at the KwaDukuza taxi rank on Wednesday.

Local residents caught and assaulted the 34-year-old man. He was wanted in connection with six rapes reported in Ntshawini, Tete, Tinley Manor, and Umhlali this year.

Police took him to hospital under police guard.

“His modus operandi was to promise the victims jobs and lure them to a secluded area, where he would threaten them with a knife and a firearm before raping them,” Gwala said.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Major-General Bheki Langa, said although they appreciated the public’s help in catching suspected criminals, people should not take the law into their own hands.

“We strongly condemn the acts of vigilantism. If the culprit is apprehended, the police must be contacted. We appeal to other people who had been victims of the same incidents and who have not reported to the police, to come forward.”
