Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police on Wednesday condemned the killing of two officers within two weeks.

"We want to remind those that are behind these attacks that we will not rest until they are behind bars," acting provincial police commissioner Bheki Langa said.

He was reacting to the murder of Constable Lindokuhle Backum, who was killed in the Umkhanyakude area on Tuesday night.

Another officer, Constable Ntombifikile Virginia Ndlovu, was shot dead while reacting to a business robbery in Ixopo last week.

Langa called Backum a hero and said authorities would not "be deterred by these thugs".

Backum was killed while on duty in Makhonyeni, Jozini. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said Backum and fellow officers had tried to pull over a car. During the ensuing chase, the suspects opened fire, hitting Backum in the neck.

A manhunt for the killers was underway.

"Police have been recently breaking the back of crime syndicates in the Umkhanyakude area and the death of Constable Backum comes as a blow to initiatives underway in the area."

Police arrested a number of suspects and confiscated truckloads of counterfeit goods in the area in recent weeks.
