Johannesburg – Four men were arrested for armed robbery and kidnapping during a sting operation in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

In a statement, police said they had received information on a possible armed robbery of a British American Tobacco (BAT) vehicle in the Madadeni area near Newcastle. “An intelligence-driven operation was conducted,” police said.

Two suspects hijacked the BAT vehicle and kidnapped the driver, police said. A chase ensued.

“The suspects' vehicle allegedly lost control and crashed into a nearby house. Two suspects were immediately arrested and a hijacked motor vehicle with cigarettes valued at about R300 000 was recovered.”

Police said a few minutes later, two other gang members were also arrested in their getaway motor vehicle.

The four suspects, aged between 37 and 50, will appear in the Madadeni Magistrate's court soon.

The sting operation was conducted by Newcastle Crime Intelligence, the Newcastle K9 Unit and member of the Hawks.

KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said they would continue with similar operations to prevent violent crimes in the province.
