Bergville- The National Freedom Party's chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Vikizitha Mlotshwa, has survived an an apparent assassination attempt, the political party said on Saturday.

His vehicle was shot at on Friday evening in Bergville.

The party said the incident happened at around 22:20.

Mlotshwa was entering his home when five bullets hit his vehicle, narrowly escaping him.

Two of the shots hit the driver's seat.

He had been travelling alone at the time.

This incident happened on the eve of the NFP National Working Committee meeting which is scheduled to sit on Saturday in Durban.

He would no longer be attending the meeting.

NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudi said Mlotshwa had since a opened case with the police.

"We have also requested SAPS Provincial Commissioner to ensure that more police are deployed in the area for the safety of our leader and his family," Sigudu said.

"Once again, people must remember the name 'Vikizitha' [Zulu for 'blocks the enemy'] on its own sends a strong message to all those who are against our leader."

This was one of several attacks on NFP leaders in KZN this year alone.

Last month, NFP PR councillor Beauty Nompumelelo Zondi, 45, was shot and killed outside her home in the Nhlanhleni area in Msinga.

Police said she had been found dead outside her house and the motive for the killing was not known.

At the time, Sigudu said the party believed the murder was politically motivated.

"This is the third murder in [a] short space of time," Sigudu told News24 last month.

In February, the NFP's Phositshe Mbatha was killed in Basamlilo near Ulundi. He was accosted by unknown gunmen who shot him and injured another person. A third person escaped unharmed.
