Durban - Glenwood High School’s governing body has refused to comment following the arrest of former principal Trevor Kershaw on fraud charges.

"I have been instructed by our attorneys and the police not to say anything, so you will have to speak to them," governing body chairperson Robert Young told News24 on Wednesday.

Kershaw appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Friday after 1 577 irregular payments worth more than R5m were uncovered during a forensic audit. He was released on bail of R100 000 and would be back in court on June 21, Independent Online reported.

According to a press statement on the school’s website, the audit was unrelated to his resignation in 2015. Kershaw denied any wrongdoing.

The payments were allegedly made to Kershaw from January 2007 to December 2015.

On Monday, the Daily News reported that the governing body was to convene a closed meeting to discuss the alleged fraud.

The paper reported that parents had been stunned by the revelations, which had tainted the image of one of Durban’s oldest schools.
