Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal taxi driver has been shot and killed by his own passenger, police said on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said that the driver was on the corner of Selborne and Derick Uys Road in Umbilo, Durban when he was killed.

"He was allegedly shot by one of the passengers who were in a taxi. He died at the scene and the suspect fled the scene on foot."

Rescue Care paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were alerted to the scene at around 07:00am.

"On arrival Paramedics found that a taxi driver had been shot multiple times in his vehicle.

"Paramedics assessed the man and found that there was nothing more [they] could do for him due to the severity of his injuries and he was declared deceased at the scene."

It was still unclear what the motive behind the shooting was. A murder docket has been opened and will be investigated, Zwane confirmed.
